The airport is 8 kilometers from downtown Washington D.C. and under strict control of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority due to its proximity to the nation’s capital.

History of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport
The airport has a long and interesting history dating as far back as 1926. It has gone through many different stages in its life, from being built as a military airbase during World War II to being known as Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
When Congress lifted the federal prohibition on airport development in the capital in 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appropriated $15 million to build the National Airport.
Construction of Washington National Airport began two years later in 1940. It was opened in 1941.
After WWII in 1945, US Congress passed a law putting the control of the airport within Virginia but under the jurisdiction of the US federal government. After several expansions, the Metro railway station began servicing the airport in 1977.
The Washington National Airport Terminal and South Hangar Line were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. In 1998, the US Congress adopted the present name to honor President Ronald Reagan.
Today, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is one of the country’s important airports serving more than 90 nonstop destinations across the US and Canada.
It is the main hub for American Airlines. Other major airlines operating at DCA are Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and Alaska Airlines, and many more.
